There is a TON of ice so I am very confident we will be ice fishing throughout the month of March. Late ice can be awesome...thanks for the view, I do have plenty of openings...be safe and stay tuned!Chuck Kashnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07866497037556918835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8477635974497413437.post-49551439002441633502014-02-17T10:36:00.001-05:002014-02-17T10:38:02.127-05:00WATERPROOF WINTER BOOTSCurrently, the conditions on top of the ice is very sloppy. We have 14- 24 inches of ice statewide, but there is also 12 to 25 inches of snow on top of it!....the 25 inches would be drifts but here on LSC we have and honest 16 inches of snow. The main issue with snow and ice fishing is the water and slush it creates....these conditions change over night at times.....so when I tell you WATERPROOF WINTER BOOTS....here are examples of what I mean.
These are insulated rubber boots made by Ranger. I wear these most of the time!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHQgDZgeob14cceu4TXInYSQ6wAHHN0LmGK64-SHpVGjiDbjU5VltCpyjtz9MBtvd1ZzcRshPA9Pu1lp1KXQRekzJW9aDjmz0DrrYbCc0xIfbBreYUqX_BACe5qn6cpmB_qBLwi8FrDnw/s1600/ranger+boot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHQgDZgeob14cceu4TXInYSQ6wAHHN0LmGK64-SHpVGjiDbjU5VltCpyjtz9MBtvd1ZzcRshPA9Pu1lp1KXQRekzJW9aDjmz0DrrYbCc0xIfbBreYUqX_BACe5qn6cpmB_qBLwi8FrDnw/s400/ranger+boot.jpg" /></a></div>
If you are prone to cold feet which I am not...these are a better choice they are called Baffin boots made in Canada
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs4Bx3-cEwM70o1HzWHqNu-CQlz7lJrjTAeZZeqSKbqIfmXjPEXmnVh-OWidhcvukJip-2Rs6CV7IUqvEVczbGAr5Yd14Ts8uffniWGw_TaPLrJvW-CRTHVY107v2uO2-Oos5mq31-lJM/s1600/baffin+boots.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs4Bx3-cEwM70o1HzWHqNu-CQlz7lJrjTAeZZeqSKbqIfmXjPEXmnVh-OWidhcvukJip-2Rs6CV7IUqvEVczbGAr5Yd14Ts8uffniWGw_TaPLrJvW-CRTHVY107v2uO2-Oos5mq31-lJM/s400/baffin+boots.jpg" /></a></div>
Lots of folks love Muck Boots they work good too
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWPte6lBVZQwLWFVGnT2CHVVV8kEEfSnQH7tUYsVKPFHcW4vFzH-kmEm7M0_FJ5_SLd1fLSvSc-VNsBRaRBFyiCLV6JVK-faTWMzJ6BHpEg0LlRK_leE-dJEr_wB3PyV3n_4f4SgXADE4/s1600/muck+boots.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWPte6lBVZQwLWFVGnT2CHVVV8kEEfSnQH7tUYsVKPFHcW4vFzH-kmEm7M0_FJ5_SLd1fLSvSc-VNsBRaRBFyiCLV6JVK-faTWMzJ6BHpEg0LlRK_leE-dJEr_wB3PyV3n_4f4SgXADE4/s400/muck+boots.jpg" /></a></div>
and lastly an all-round, all season, hunting, boat fishing, mud and snow favorite...LaCrosse Burly
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpGe6tAnfwzmH_WpT5xkcpzAzm5eoIIWqgJTCr60ToStVAKCKEsrGkkx1jIyyMRKVwWLcBH_qyU__9-Bh_L0iVeZzp2VRHsCyrRRGyVec-mDfXBtQeLLxwTiJ2jSj8IcnWdNYnujyzU6o/s1600/burly+boots.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpGe6tAnfwzmH_WpT5xkcpzAzm5eoIIWqgJTCr60ToStVAKCKEsrGkkx1jIyyMRKVwWLcBH_qyU__9-Bh_L0iVeZzp2VRHsCyrRRGyVec-mDfXBtQeLLxwTiJ2jSj8IcnWdNYnujyzU6o/s400/burly+boots.jpg" /></a></div>
There are plenty of other choices like the Smurf clan love the white Bunny boots but I don't like trying to untie frozen laces....Thanks for the view and there is still a ton of ice fishing left!

Everyone who knows me... knows if it was my shanty... it would be blue with a big yellow 48 painted on its side....but honestly its impossible to beat the new portable shanties...

The Pike fishing lately has been very good. Once the winds laid down...the flags have been many:) The Bullgills still seem to be roaming the deep water....the Champlain boys are hammering the Crappies after dark....rumors have it there is a Smelt bite again finally on Bomo...I plan to check that out this week some evening. Fried Smelt for the Daytona 500 would be awesome...
For some of you who harvest Pike, below are two helpful pixs to help you with removing "Y" bones along the lateral line. Personally, I pickle Pike and the brine dissolves them.

The meltdown and rain we had this last weekend really didn't hurt anything. Some bank edges are tender so be careful getting on and off the ice. I plan on using a plank to get on just to protect the edge (bank) I use. Stay safe everyone, thanks for the view....I will post hero shots after this weekend.Chuck Kashnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07866497037556918835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8477635974497413437.post-85672105066385727402014-01-09T16:50:00.002-05:002014-01-09T16:50:23.800-05:00Vermont Ice Fishing 2014Today was an ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL day! While the mission was to establish a foot print on my primary area...I did fish a little while with a jigging rod...

With this week's forecast I think I will be walking on the water this next weekend!

There are a couple places to fish but I am a wrap as far as guiding trips. The edges and banks are sketchy and if you need to wear a PFD, spikes around your neck and walk a plank to go on the ice...I'm done with taking clients! It was an AWESOME ice fishing season! Thanks for the trips, views and support! I will continue to post but the focus is clearly moving to my Fly Fishing and Spin Fishing blogs....Thanks again and think Spring. Trout Season in Vermont opens April 13, 2013....Lets go fishing!
